Peppercorn days were the days of an Australian childhood: beautiful, strange days, filled with birds, animals, people like Ma Jenkins— nineteen stone of zest for life, mother of nineteen sons—and the granite-fisted Ginsberg girls, outrage incarnate. These days arc recalled by Mr Rose in a form which is not strictly autobiographical. His Paul, to whom so many funny, fantastic, vivid things happened, is not himself. But while Mr Rose claims a certain freedom to indulge gaiety and invention, he holds closely to the essential truth of both childhood and Australia as he knew them. His delightful book may disconcert those who insist that a story should observe all the rules, but it will certainly enchant anyone who enjoys originality and vigour.
