In Mistaken Intentions , a new variation of Jane Austen ’s Pride and Prejudice , Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy face a whirlwind of misconceptions, falsehoods, unexpected alliances, and intense feelings. When Darcy arrives in Hertfordshire, he finds the rural surroundings and Meryton society beneath him. Thus prejudiced, he attends a local assembly, where his convictions intensify as he hears Elizabeth mocking him for his arrogance. However initially dismissive of her, he finds himself unexpectedly intrigued by Eizabeth's lively spirit and striking green eyes. Mr Bingley’s sibling, Rebecca, who, unlike her older sisters, is a kind and considerate woman, gives Darcy reason to examine his first impressions. Miss Rebecca Bingley quickly sees that a relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth is not only possible but ideal and is determined to play matchmaker. However, Darcy’s feelings become increasingly confused, as do the circumstances around him. A scorned suitor from Elizabeth’s past, Mr Fowler, returns to Meryton and harbours a grudge against Elizabeth, spinning a dark narrative of his relationship with her. Fowler’s claims echo in Darcy’s mind, casting doubt on her character and shaking his perception of the woman he is beginning to admire. Meanwhile, Elizabeth, in an effort to ensure Jane’s happiness and protect her fragile heart from certain disappointment, inadvertently complicates not only her sister’s chance at true love but her own. In the midst of misunderstandings and disappointments, Elizabeth must deal with her hopeless love for Mr Darcy and her loyalty to her sister. Prejudice, slander, and wounded pride threaten to destroy any chance of happiness, and Elizabeth, as well as Darcy, must learn to trust their hearts before they lose faith in love altogether.
