[A collection of essays compiled by Pulak Dutta]
Anadinath Dutta [26 October 1924 – 25 November 2002] is a rarely talked about musician who made seminal contribution to the music of Bengal in general and to the musical culture of Santiniketan in particular.
Anadinath spent the first 24 years of his life in his home town, Bishnupur where his music as well as his personality developed. In Bishnupur he participated in all the local festivals as percussionist, singer and dancer. He then entered the world of Bangla Kirtan as a Khol player and established himself as an unparalleled master of the instrument. Anadinath taught Tabla and Pakhowaj at the Bishnupur Music college ; very soon he became a distinguished Pakhowaj player of the Bishnupur gharana.
He joined Visva Bharati, Santiniketan in 1949 and lived there for the rest of his life. Creatively applying his experience of being a part of a wide range of musical spheres, Anadinath enriched the Bengali musical culture developing at Santiniketan.
