Mention of the War of 1812 evokes images of blazing frigate duels on the Atlantic, Dolly Madison fleeing the White House or Andrew Jackson's stunning defeat of the British at New Orleans. The clever tactics and heroic leadership of MacDonough, however, had a greater effect on the course of history and the status of a secure, respected nationhood. This was a victory greatly celebrated at the time but treated lightly by later historians, and its glory has undeservedly faded into seldom-consulted archives, despite the fact that it was the very embodiment of the young nation's spirit, ingenuity and courage. This proud struggle secured for America a place among respected nations, dispelling the image of a bumbling, disaffected erstwhile colony.
