This book takes a journey through 20th-century Georgian art music, which reflects the turbulence of the country’s history, from its short independence (1918-1921) and the Soviet occupation (1921-1991) to the collapse of the Soviet Union. The monograph shows how the roots of the Georgian art music were shaped in the works of the first generation of composers (Paliashvili, Dolidze, Sulkhanishvili), and how the introduction of socialist realism made an imprint on the development of art music. The subsequent shift from socialist realism is also explored through the works of the 1960s generation (Kancheli, Gabunia, Nasidze, unofficial composers and others). This book’s examination of Georgia’s (as a former Soviet republic) musical legacy might be used as an important stimulus for Eastern European studies, as well as the study of musicology.
