The editor of the English edition of Father van Nell-Breuning's work has had no purpose other than to present a faithful translation of the original. In some few places, examples and references that were of significance or interest only to German readers have been dropped. Footnotes have been added explaining persons or things which might not be readily intelligible in the English-speaking world.
In certain sections there occur expressions for which, as Father Nell-Breuning remarks, English and American economic science has no technical equivalents. For their judgments on these difficult passages, the editor is indebted to Mr. Theodore Riebeth of the Marquette University College of Engineering, to the Reverend Francis S. Betten, S.J., professor of history, Marquette University, and to Dr. Goetz Briefs of the Catholic University of America.
Both encyclicals, contained in the appendix, should be read in their entirety before turning to the commentary. The text is repeated at the beginning of each chapter for convenience only.
