The present study evaluates settlement evidence of the Early Iron Age in West Central Europe (Reinecke Hallstatt C/D, c. 750 to 475 B.C.). Analysis of the poor and hitherto neglected evidence available provides results which include the definition of settlement types, the recognition of settlement phases, the reconstruction of settlement patterns and the inference of some factors behind their development. It can be shown that inferred patterns and processes not only tie in with socio-cultural developments inferred from cemetery evidence, but also offer new insight into social and economic structures of the Hallstatt period.
