The lights were getting brighter, and the ghastly sounds drew closer. He could hear the crunch of boots on stonework, the rhythmic crack of whips, and the curious shuddering splash of the lash meeting flesh. He buried his head in his cloak, but could not govern his horrified curiosity, which demanded he look up at the savage parade. From the deck of the ship which carries him into Venice, Rob Weaver sees evidence of an old, but now illegal trade: slaves in chains waiting to be sold. This is his first glimpse of a beautiful but corrupt city where the dark alleys and misty canals hide debauchery and decadence. Rob jumps ship. After escaping from a lecherous cut-throat, he meets an English milord: Damiens. The outward signs of Damiens' wealth include elaborate orgies, – his treasury holds jewels and finery that are soon lavished on the Kentish lad. However, before Rob can escape Damiens' clutches and return to England, he must learn the nobleman's secret – and learn to survive among men who would make him a plaything and a slave.
