The aim of the book is to dissolve the individual. Every individual must live up to the task of defining oneself. It thus becomes a thing. Thought loses its momentum and becomes banal. Yet Deleuze and Heidegger recognize an ambiguity in banality: It paralyzes thought, but once banality has become unbearable, it becomes creative by forcing individuals to transcend themselves. Thus, thought is born.
