Over the past seven years, we have made extensive use of scanning electron micrographs of tissues and organs as an important teaching device in histology. Their use has been met with an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response among students, for they have found such images to be of great benefit to their understanding and appreciation of complex biological interrelationships. Encouraged by the response of students and the interest of colleagues, we felt compelled to prepare a text devoted to the three-dimensional organization of tissues and organs, illustrated mainly with scanning electron micrographs. In addition to its utility in upper division and graduate courses with a histological emphasis, we hope that this book will be a useful addition to the teaching of such courses as introductory biology and physiology.
