Mňačko depicts the behaviour of the ruling regime and the party while providing a critique of the 1950s – the period of Stalinism and the cult of personality. The story is told through the character of Frank, a photographer who must file a photographic report from the state funeral of an unnamed politician. Frank had known the politician for many years: they attended school together and he knew him as a universally respected partisan commander before he embarked on a political career. At the funeral, he recalls how the politician gradually transformed into a ruthless and cowardly man who would do anything to hold onto power.
