This is a sequel to the first volume of Soviet short stories with parallel English translations on opposite pages. The translations have been either slightly adapted or specially made for the occasion. Notes at the back of the book explain details of Soviet life, historical or other facts which may be unknown to the reader and passages which are too idiomatic to be rendered close to the original. The stories are not arranged in chronological order: they show the authors' attitude to ordinary people in their personal life and their work and the selection ends with a satirical piece on human foibles.
