J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. 2013, 46, 245-301.We analyse charge carrier propagation in graphene-based structures surrounded by conducting regions in which electrons obey the Schrödinger equation. The influence of Schrödinger–Dirac transformations on electron transmission has been investigated, and significant differences have been observed compared to the case when such transformations are not accounted for. We emphasize that, in order to improve the transmission coefficient through a structure consisting of simple graphene sheets or periodically gated graphene structures surrounded by conducting regions, the electron effective mass and velocity in the conducting regions must be appropriately chosen.
