Islamabad: Quaid-i-Azam University, National Institute of Pakistan Studies, 1997. — 147 p.The aim of this work is to present a sketch of the sound system and tonal system of Kalam Kohistani, as well as to make text and wordlist data for this language available to other researchers. Kalam Kohistani, or Kalami for short, is one of many languages spoken in the mountain areas of northern Pakistan. It belongs to the Dardic branch of the Indo- Aryan group of languages. While it is true that on most of the languages of northern Pakistan at least some work has been done and some publications can be found, it must also be said that vast areas of the phonology, grammar, and vocabulary of these languages remain largely unexplored till the present day.The current work can only hope to make a very modest contribution. Any single one of the more than six thousand languages currently spoken in this world is rich enough to provide a lifetime of work for a large team of linguists.
