A sequel to the author's Études sur les dieux phéniciens hérités par l'Empire Romain (Leiden, 1970), the present volume is best read with the former at hand, so frequent are the cross references to it. Du Mesnil reaffirms his 1970 view that from the second millennium B.C. Canaan, the land of the Canaanites, was the equivalent of Phoenicia, the land of the Phoenicians, even though the latter terms do not appear before Homer. Hence in the volume under review he substitutes "Canaan" for "Phéniciens."
