NATO planners had a very difficult problem. The prospect of a catastrophic shooting war with the forces of the Warsaw Pact was a serious possibility. Facing NATO forces were the vaunted Red hordes, the combined armies of the Soviet Union, Poland, the German Democratic Republic, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and other nations, all poised to launch a co-ordinated combined arms attack across the German plains and deep into Western Europe.
