The chapters in this volume were originally presented at a conference at the University of Pennsylvania in April 2002, "Time and Temporality in the Ancient World," which I organized in my capacity that year as Director of the Center for Ancient Studies. This turned out to be a truly interdisciplinary event, memorable not only for the number and variety of disciplines represented, but also for the sense of a coherent and common enterprise among all participants. It is a pleasure, therefore, to present here a selection of contributions from the conference, which I hope will convey to the reader something of the collaborative spirit that suffused it.
