“Studies of the Senegalese novel have long emphasized, incorrectly, the non-militant, even passive attitudes in works from the embarrassingly friendly Force Bonté (Bakary Diallo, Paris, 1926) to novels of the 1970s. Madubuike, instead, has found that except for Diallo’s novel, Senegalese writers challenge the politics of assimilation and the assumption of superiority by the French colonizers.”
